What makes a city great is a topic guaranteed to spark heated debate. Now architectural firm RMJM Hillier has ridden into the fray with a list of "America's Best Cities for Design," produced with the American Institute of Architecture and Zogby International. American cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants were judged according to criteria such as the quality of public transit, the number of LEED-registered buildings (indicating sustainable design) and how many of the city's employees work within creative industries such as performing arts or publishing.

What does design really contribute to an organization's bottom line?
Plenty. Studies have now shown that design-oriented firms in all kinds of industries outperform their more-traditional peers--that design and innovation go hand-in-hand with financial success. Research from Peer Insight has calculated a tenfold advantage in stock-market returns versus the S&P 500 for companies focused on consumer-experience design.

The application deadline for students and recent graduates who'd like to participate this June is April 15th. The cost is $2000 plus travel and food. Call me if you are interested in receiving an application (404.395.1559) or download one from Project M.

Nowhere, perhaps, has the green ethos been embraced more fervently than in the design community, a group that, in the words of Frog Design president and COO Doreen Lorenzo, "inherently wants to do good and change the world."

Last Tuesday I accepted a PIAG Award of Excellence on behalf of AIGA at an awards ceremony hosted by Bennett Graphics. The award given for the SEED Awards Program designed by Linda Doherty, current AIGA Atlanta Board member and partner of Citizen Studio, with assistance from then SEED Coordinator, Elizabeth Boyle. Bennett Graphics graciously donated the printing and binding of the book, Neenah donated the paper and Gregory Miller Photography donated the photography. While honored to accept the award on their behalf and yours, congratulations really goes the team that produced the award winning piece. Copies of the 2005 SEED Program are available for pick-up at the membership table at each of our events.
