What is Pecha Kucha Night?

Pecha Kucha Night, devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.

But as we all know, give a mike to a designer (especially an architect) and you'll be trapped for hours. The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system for avoiding this fate. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each - giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.

Pecha Kucha (which is Japanese for the sound of conversation) has tapped into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown, without having to rent a gallery or chat up a magazine editor. This is a demand that seems to be global - as Pecha Kucha Night, without any pushing, has spread virally to over 100 cities across the world. Find a location and join the conversation.

If you are interested in starting a Pecha Kucha Night in your city, please contact: pechakucha@klein-dytham.com

Essential 2 Life's Project "PUSH is a structured environment that will instill marketable skills in youth from the Atlanta Public Schools to enable them to pursue careers in fields they would not have been exposed to due to lack of opportunities." - www.e2lonline.com

In this mentoring focused initiative AIGA is dedicated to expose eight creative High School students to the design industry. The initiative kicks off September 19th with a studio tour of Sage Path. The tour enriches students and professional with the work environment of this print and interactive firm while engaging with other professionals in the design industry.

The following Saturday the students will visit the Art Institute of Atlanta, exposing them to design education, while being inspired by the exhibited work at the institute.

The students are then asked to design a poster about love. Mentors will be assigned to students to assist with photography for their posters. The students will find elements in Midtown or Downtown Atlanta for this project. Computers will be provided to the students to execute on the posters.

Mac Papers and Standard Press are sponsoring the paper and printing of these posters. Essential 2 Life is hosting a fundraiser on October 22nd at which these posters will be shared, promoting the initiative and the students' talent.

Critt Graham, Sr. Dies at 69 Leading Atlanta Design Voice & Founder posted by Matt Porter
at 8/4/2009 8:52:10 PM

Critt Graham, founder of one of Atlanta's longest running, most successful and respected design firms passed away on August 1, 2009 from heart failure. Family, friends and colleagues across the nation are staggered by the loss.

Critt Graham was one of Atlanta design's most beloved figures, celebrated for his talent as a designer, photographer and painter. He was a founding board member of AIGA-Atlanta. He was frank, but kind; he could be tough but fair and gentle in all dealings with friends and colleagues.

Mr. Graham never considered design to be a hobby or an extension of fine art. It was a medium that when used effectively delivered a message in a creative way. He knew to be effective you had to pay attention to your client at all costs, deliver the goods every time and never, ever take either clients or talent for granted.

But Mr. Graham treated photography and painting differently- the black-clad businessman with silver hair and a voice that often growled, "?Damn right," was a light hearted kid when holding a camera or a brush. Every year the annual company Christmas card was an original Graham painting, often surprising those who knew him with its sensitivity, tenderness, and, sometimes, even gosh darn-it sentimentality. For the past few years of his life, Mr. Graham had stepped away from the direction at Critt Graham and Associates, devoting himself to painting and exercise. He was determined to enjoy his retirement in Atlanta near his family and at his beloved retreat in Montana.

Bob Wages had lunch with Critt every two weeks or so for the past few years. Their last luncheon was just 16 days ago. "Critt looked great," recalls Wages. "He told me he was exercising every day, painting more and more and loving life. He was completely recovered from his last bad bout with illness some years back. He asked me about my family and we both moaned about the lousy state of the economy. It was just good old Critt and I having a nice time. After we finished our meal, he excused himself a bit early because he had an errand to run: he was shipping his latest painting to his brother in California. It was a painting of his brother. Critt was a wonderful friend. A wonderful creative spirit and a heck of a lot of fun. I am going to miss him."

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 6 at 2:00pm at Tom M. Wages Snellville Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour before service, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the High Museum of Art, 1280 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta, GA 30309, Attn: Annual Fund, in memory of Mr. Critt G. Graham. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.wagesfuneralservice.com.

My World and Welcome to It: Finding the Authentic in Regional Design posted by Albert Whitley

"My World and Welcome to It: Finding the Authentic in Regional Design" by Victoria Price

Tuesday, 7-8 p.m.
Events Space, fourth floor, Building C
SCAD-Atlanta, 1600 Peachtree St.
Atlanta, Ga.

What is regional design? Designer Victoria Price contends that it is the confluence of personal history, regional tastes and values, and popular culture. In short, it is how we live and have been taught to see.

Growing up in Hollywood as the daughter of a movie star/art collector father and a costume and later architectural designer mother, Victoria learned to see the world through their eyes. But she also was profoundly influenced by the place in which she lived--the West. Price's lecture on regional design draws deeply from her personal design history and lineage in bringing to light regional design as the nexus of meaningful and authentic design.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

These chairs, sampled from Portfolio Center's collection that reaches over 10 years, represent design as a catalyst for new ideas as they honor history interpreted through the individual's powerful life stories. each chair expresses abstract thought, human experience, and our rich cultural history.

Art Not Ads is the first art show to celebrate the talents of those who work in the Atlanta advertising, design and interactive community. Mediums will include paintings, sculpture, jewelry, mixed media, photography and a few surprises. The idea of the show was born to a few creatives who yearned to have a place to show the artwork they create in their spare time. And then gather with other creatives to show off their skills. And then have a big party. That's pretty much the inspiration for the show.

Art Not Ads will also serve as a benefit for the Grady High School Fine Arts Program. A $5 at the door donation and a portion of all sales with be given to the program to further their arts education program.

Grand opening night will be Friday, November 14th from 6 to 11 pm at Studio Chambers, 741 Edgewood Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30307. The show is also open Saturday, November 15th from 2 to 10 pm and Sunday, November 16th from 1 to 5.

Brian Singer and "the 1000 journals project" comes to Atlanta posted by Kristina

Presentations on World Renowned Collaborative Project

Are a Collaboration Between Two Atlanta Art Schools

What if 1,000 blank journals were circulating throughout the world, beckoning contributors who find the journals by chance on trains, in cafés, and anonymously left on doorsteps? Well, it's actually going on right now ? and has been since 2000 when "someguy," a.k.a. Brian Singer, a San Francisco-based artist and designer, launched the project.

Singer will speak more in depth about the 1000 Journals Project at The Portfolio Center, 125 Bennett Street in Midtown Atlanta, on Thursday, August 21, from 10 am to 12 noon.

On Friday, August 22, he comes to The Art Institute of Atlanta from 10 am to 1 pm, where he will make a presentation to the students, including a "lunch 'n learn", and will briefly attend the annual Alumni Reunion that evening in The Art Institute of Atlanta Gallery, beginning at 7 pm. The Art Institute of Atlanta is located at 6600 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, 100 Embassy Row, in Sandy Springs.

Immediately following the Alumni Reunion, he will be at the Youngblood Gallery, in Virginia-Highlands, for a 9:30 pm screening of the film, "1000 Journals," presented by Docufest. The film, by documentary filmmaker Andrea Kreuzhage, is about people around the world whose lives are touched by these traveling journals.

Don?t let the rejection of your clients or those other shows keep your peers from seeing your best work.

Georgia student wins second at national SkillsUSA competition posted by Albert Whitley

Alyssa Ailion, a senior at Walton High School in Marietta and the SkillsUSA Georgia winner placed 2nd(!!) in the SkillsUSA National Competition. It was a tough competition, the difference between first and second was 7 points out of 1000. Alyssa worked hard and took every opportunity possible to learn more between the state and national competition. You can be very proud of her, she was a wonderful representative for Georgia.

AIGA Atlanta has teamed up with PIAG Education Committee on April 25, 2008 to develop the Advertising/Graphic Design exam for the regional competition. We were very pleased with the outcomes and amazed with the students skill level to create beautiful and imaginative entries. We do look forward to participating in next years regional competition.

AIGA Atlanta and PIAG is committed to the development of future creatives in both design and printing industries.

Top 10 Cities for "design" posted by Ben

What makes a city great is a topic guaranteed to spark heated debate. Now architectural firm RMJM Hillier has ridden into the fray with a list of "America's Best Cities for Design," produced with the American Institute of Architecture and Zogby International. American cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants were judged according to criteria such as the quality of public transit, the number of LEED-registered buildings (indicating sustainable design) and how many of the city's employees work within creative industries such as performing arts or publishing.

What does design really contribute to an organization's bottom line?

Plenty. Studies have now shown that design-oriented firms in all kinds of industries outperform their more-traditional peers--that design and innovation go hand-in-hand with financial success. Research from Peer Insight has calculated a tenfold advantage in stock-market returns versus the S&P 500 for companies focused on consumer-experience design.

Rebuilding a Legacy: The Gastrotypographicalassemblage posted by Kristina
at 3/7/2008 7:21:59 PM

Each day our world changes, the old quickly vanishing, displaced by inspired new designs, new perspectives and brilliant imaginative creations. Society seemingly demands it, our fascination and appetite for embracing the new apparently endless. Who of us is not awed by the scale of Dubai?s architecture, amused by the latest television commercial, drawn to the value and logic of the Prius Hybrid automobile or the aesthetic and functional design of Apple?s iPhone?

But what of the abandoned?what responsibility do we have for preserving our displaced creations, yesterday?s symbols of inspiration, logic and creative ingenuity? Champions for the salvation of one such creation is the Center for Design Study, where I serve as executive director. This Atlanta nonprofit foundation is battling to preserve a seminal piece of America?s design history that for 20 years was mounted on the cafeteria wall of the CBS building. While some may not be aware of this inspiring three-dimensional memorial to typography, many are familiar with its creator, Lou Dorfsman. The CBS cafeteria wall is as legendary as its visionary designer and art director. Conceived in the mid-1960s and ultimately completed in 1966, the expansive wall, spanning over 35-feet wide and 8-feet tall, is a national design treasure. In producing the wall Dorfsman enlisted support from life-long friend and design legend Herb Lubalin. Lubalin, along with Tom Carnase, masterfully crafted the typography for the aptly dubbed ?Gastrotypographicalassemblage.?

Looking back, 2007 may well be remembered as the year green went mainstream: Al Gore got an Oscar, Wal-Mart flogged organic jammies, and bottled water went from being a symbol of purity to the beverage equivalent of a pack of Luckies.

Nowhere, perhaps, has the green ethos been embraced more fervently than in the design community, a group that, in the words of Frog Design president and COO Doreen Lorenzo, "inherently wants to do good and change the world."

Photograph your polling place. Document Democracy. posted by Sherra Bell, AIGA Atlanta President
at 11/2/2006 8:54:40 PM

The Polling Place Photo Project is a nationwide experiment in citizen journalism that seeks to empower citizens to capture, post and share photographs of democracy in action. By documenting their local voting experience on November 7, voters can contribute to an archive of photographs that captures the richness and complexity of voting in America.

With citizens' images and the information that accompanies them, the Project becomes a research tool on how voting happens in America and how it can be designed to be easier, less confusing and more enjoyable. The project intends to collect photographs of every polling place in America, so you are encouraged to participate no matter where you vote, how large or small your polling place is, what kind of ballot you use, or what your party affiliation.

Get your cameras ready. Election Day is November 7, 2006. We need your photographs!

In the spirit of public access and broad dissemination, this is an open-source project. Photography of polling places is governed by state and local law?there is no one answer for what is permissible. The Polling Place Photo Project and AIGA encourage all participants in this project to follow all applicable local, state and federal laws.

Supporting Our Own posted by Sherra Bell
at 10/3/2006 8:50:08 AM

Last Friday night a benefit was held to in support of Scott Hamilton and his family.

Who's Scott?
Scott, a dedicated UGA football fan and 7-year employee with see see eye,
suffered a stroke in June. At only 42 years old it was the last thing any of
us expected. Things most of us take for granted were gone in an instant: the
ability to verbalize thoughts, walk, read, write, finer control of his
hands. These are the "tools" with which Scott worked every day. Though he's
made excellent progress in his physical therapy, this is going to be a long
road.

Friday night?s auction was a tremendous success and exceeded all expectations thanks to all of the generous artists who donated work and to those that bid on the pieces. The team at see see eye was overwhelmed by the outpouring of generosity to help financially support the Hamiltons as Scott recovers.

The auction site http://www.seeseeeye.com/hamiltons/index.html has been updated to reflect the few pieces still left for sale as well as how to make contributions outside of the art auction to the Hamiltons for those interested.

Feel free to Gillian Mauldin with any questions at 404.812.5725.

Inequality of income, access to health and education, and access to markets for trade is trapping people in a cycle of poverty despite their best efforts.

The posters in the ?Inequality Matters? series illustrate how much disparity there is in the world even in the fundamental human condition. Rich countries, for example, account for more than 50 percent of the world?s annual income, but less than 20 percent of the population.

Design a poster!

AIGA Design Expedition to China, April 29-May 12, 2006 posted by Sherra
at 2/6/2006 9:56:51 PM

The understanding of other cultures is a prerequisite for effective communication and design. Some of the most vital moments of cultural exchange come when engaging in a true dialogue with one's peers. With this
in mind, the AIGA Center for Cross-Cultural Design is sponsoring a 13-day Design Expedition to China to visit three of China?s most dynamic cities: Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. This in-depth tour will lead a select group of American designers to engage their Chinese counterparts??to experience first hand how a Chinese designer lives and works, to discover the sources
of his/her inspiration, and to learn how he communicates in this rapidly changing global environment.

In addition to discovering some of China?s greatest architecture, art and cultural riches, our itinerary will take us to the leading design programs & universities as well as into the studios of some of China?s top designers.

Space is limited to the 25 people on a first-come, first-served basis. For a registration form or more information, please contact: Robert Linsky,

PROJECT M / NEW ORLEANS EXPEDITION
The Mbulance has launched and is due in Atlanta the morning of Thursday October 20! Help us out with your donations and stop by Mick's Tuesday night for a drink. (There will be great bar specials just for us!)

TIPS FOR DONATIONS

(1) Keep it simple: a package of sharpies, a straight-edge, an exacto knife and a package of blades ? the littlest things are the things we designers depend on most. While great, don't feel like you have to kick in an Adobe Design Suite to help out.

(2) Be resourceful! Office Depot has a recycling program. Bring them your spent ink cartridges (any make, any color) and they'll give you reams of paper (NOTE:only one per customer per day) OR $2.50 off your Office Depot purchase. A couple of reams of paper would be great for The Cause and you'd be a hero for free.
