SEED stands for Southeastern Excellence in Design. AIGA Atlanta's 2nd biennial SEED Awards showed us just that - design excellence lives and thrives here in the Southeast.
SEED is the largest design competition in this region and the 2007 competition received over 540 entries from all across the southeast - Alabama, the Carolinas, Florida, and Tennessee. Entries were submitted in over 50 categories covering the broad spectrum of design disciplines including print, packaging, environmental, interactive, broadcast, motion, etc. Our panel of judges consisted of 4 renowned design professionals - Rick Anwyl, founder EAI and the Center for Design Study; James Harris, founder and CEO Elemental Interactive; Minsoo Pak, executive creative director, SparksGrove; and Pat Smith, former VP and creative director, Turner South.
For the first time, and in keeping with AIGA's commitment to furthering excellence in design as a broadly-defined discipline, the 2007 SEED Awards competition was conducted on two tracks: In Track ONE – Case Studies were judged primarily on their business value, recognizing design as a strategic tool. In Track TWO – Artifacts were judged primarily on their cultural value, recognizing design as a craft.
The competition was capped with the Awards Gala held on June 11, 2007 at the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta, when all SEED Award winners were recognized and their work was on display. It was a sparkling evening with friends, colleagues and peers - eating, drinking and celebrating great design and the designers that are helping grow our creative economy. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the AIGA Fellow Award to Brad Copeland, founder of Cooper Copeland Design, now Iconologic. (read Hank Richardson's tribute)
